I've misplaced my Finish DVD from Robbie so I need to know How to prepare my shellac. Well I know how, but what cut to use? This will be my first attempt at french polish. Any Help? Thnx |

I use a 1 lb cut, mostly because that's the way I learned, but one thing I like about it is it dries very fast. Most other folks use a 2 lb cut, from what I read here and in other places. Best, Michael |

1 oz of flakes to about 8 oz. of alcohol will yield about a one pound cut. Good luck. |

Put the shellac flakes in a little bag made of fine cloth, such as T-shirt material, and suspend it near the top of the alcohol in the jar with a wire hooked over the lip. As the shellac dissolves the denser solution will settle to the bottom, and push the purer alcohol to the surface to disslove the shellac. The 'self mixing' makes it go faster. If you use seedlac the wax particles will most likely be large enough to stay in the 'teabag', so long as you don't squeeze it, along with all the other dirt and stuff, so you won't have to filter it. I can get a useable mix in about two hours this way. |
